Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has criticised President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government for blaming the previous NPP administration over recent drug trafficking concerns.
In a Facebook post, Mr Azure said that after nearly two years in office, the current government should take responsibility for fixing weaknesses in the country’s security and drug-control systems.
He was responding to claims that a flawed policy at the ports had created gaps in vigilance over drug shipments.
Mr Azure argued that officials appointed by the current administration should have identified and addressed those gaps.
“Don't create the impression that your security advisors and narcotics officials are dumb, that they could not diagnose the gaps until foreigners started busting drug shipments from Ghana,” he wrote.
He said the government could not take credit for positive developments while blaming the NPP for lapses under its watch.
“After nearly two years in office, you are responsible for fixing the drug shipment problem. You can't take credit for the positive developments and blame the NPP for the lapses under your watch,” he said.
Mr Azure acknowledged that drug trafficking had become politicised, recalling how the NPP was previously labelled a “cocaine party.”
However, he said the focus should now be on the government’s responsibility to address the current problem.
“Do not shift blame to the opposition. It will not wash. They are not in charge. You are,” he added.
