Manhyia North MP Akwasi Konadu has condemned comments by NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande regarding the arrest of Manhyia South MP Baffour Awuah, describing them as a troubling indication of how state power could be used against citizens.
Speaking on ChannelOne TV, Konadu said no political actor should suggest that a state institution could be directed to arrest an individual and that security agencies would later defend the action.
“I believe that this statement by Honourable Gbande must bow down his head in shame. And I'm sorry to say that it is not right for anybody to be telling us that we directed the state institution to cause the arrest of an ordinary person for no cause and that the excesses, when it comes, will defend it,” he said.
He said such comments should concern Ghanaians, arguing that citizens were watching how state institutions and security agencies were being used.
Konadu maintained that the opposition would not be intimidated from challenging government actions or defending people whose rights it believes have been violated.
“You must bear in mind that the ordinary Ghanaian is looking at them and people with this attitude will tell them that they would also stand their ground and they will not let anybody intimidate them,” he said.
The MP also cautioned against using political power to suppress criticism, stressing that those in power would not remain there permanently.
“Power is transient,” he said, insisting that the opposition would continue demanding accountability from the government despite what he described as threats and intimidation.
