The 2024 presidential candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong-Kumankumah, has said Ghana is worse off today than it was under the leadership of the country’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline programme, she described Nkrumah as a visionary leader who had a long-term plan for Ghana’s development and worked with capable appointees to advance the country after independence.
“Nkrumah was committed to the developmental agenda of every single Ghanaian. He was concerned about the welfare of farmers, doctors, teachers, the unemployed, and every single person. He demonstrated that we had the capacity to manage our own affairs,” she said.
According to Nana Frimpomaa, Nkrumah had plans to strengthen Ghana’s defence system and achieve economic independence, but successive governments have failed to continue the long-term development agenda he started.
“He had a plan to transform Ghana, but we are worse off today as a country. We have refused to implement the long-term development plan of the late Nkrumah,” she added.
She also criticised Ghana’s current political system, claiming that the country’s two major political parties have created structures that undermine democratic development and national progress.
The CPP candidate further questioned why many of Nkrumah’s books are reportedly more readily available outside Ghana. She claimed that critics of the former president ensured some of his works were removed from local shelves.
She said Ghana could return to a path of transformation by renewing national thinking and building a shared commitment to development.
