Former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi has pledged to leave office if the NPP loses the 2028 general election under his leadership as General Secretary.
Mr Antwi, who is contesting the General Secretary position in the party’s upcoming national executive elections, said he would hold himself to the same standard of accountability he believes should apply to the current General Secretary.
Speaking on Joy News, he said he would not expect to remain in office after leading the party into another electoral defeat.
“If I sit here today, God willing, on the 3rd of October, when I’m the General Secretary of our party, and I take the party to the 2028 election, I lose it, my job is done,” he said.
Mr Antwi said he would step aside and allow another person to take over the administration of the party.
“I have to leave the scene quietly and let somebody else come and take the stage. It’s as simple as that,” he added.
His position is linked to his criticism of the retention of the NPP’s current General Secretary following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election.
Mr Antwi has argued that General Secretaries should be held accountable for the party’s electoral performance, pointing to previous instances where those who led the party into election defeats were replaced.
The NPP will hold its national executive elections on October 3, 2026, with Mr Antwi contesting the General Secretary position against incumbent Justin Kodua Frimpong, Sylvester Tetteh and Charles Dwamena.
