NPP National Women’s Organiser Mavis Hawa Koomson has alleged that her predecessor, Kate Gyamfua, and others once locked former National Women’s Organiser Otiko Afisa Djaba in her office and assaulted her.

Hawa Koomson made the allegation in an interview with Movement TV while disputing claims that Otiko Djaba later endorsed Kate Gyamfua’s bid for the national women’s organiser position.

She said the alleged incident happened between 2010 and 2016, when Kate Gyamfua served as Otiko Djaba’s deputy.

“Let me also put this on record: when Kate became Otiko’s deputy Women’s Organiser, Kate was Otiko’s deputy from 2010 to 2016. The second time that Otiko was re-elected in 2017, she didn’t take Kate as her deputy because when Kate was Otiko’s deputy, they mobilised themselves, locked Otiko up in her office and beat her.

“Her own boss, they were mobilising themselves to beat her,” Hawa Koomson alleged.

She said the alleged confrontation contributed to Otiko Djaba not retaining Kate Gyamfua as her deputy after her re-election in 2017.

Hawa Koomson also rejected suggestions that Otiko Djaba supported Kate Gyamfua’s subsequent bid for the national position.

“Otiko is alive, and she is not dead, so we can verify from her. Kate should stop saying that when she became Otiko’s deputy, Otiko blessed her. She didn’t bless her,” she said.

She further alleged that Kate Gyamfua had opposed her since she became a minister under the Akufo-Addo administration, but said she had no personal issue with her.

“I don’t have a problem with Kate, but she has a problem with me. She can continue to insult me; I don’t care, and she should be mindful of her words,” she said.

Otiko Djaba served as NPP National Women’s Organiser from 2010 to 2017 and later became Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
