Mobile phone users across Ghana’s five northern regions and parts of the Oti Region are experiencing disruptions to voice and internet services following multiple fibre cuts.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) said the damage affected three separate transmission routes supplying telecommunications capacity to the affected areas. The incidents have resulted in outages and significant degradation of 2G, 3G and 4G services.
The affected routes include the Kintampo-Buipe fibre route, the Wakawaka-Bamboi route and the Hohoe-Jasikan route, according to Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George.
The minister said technical teams from MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) had been deployed to locate the damage and begin restoration work.
The disruption has affected hundreds of network sites. According to the minister, 694 2G and 3G sites and 521 4G sites were experiencing service denial or significant degradation.
He expressed confidence that restoration would begin within hours and apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience.
The NCA has also confirmed that it is coordinating with the network operators and relevant agencies while monitoring the repairs.
