The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Jacob Anaba, has alleged that the promotion of teachers was running smoothly until the National Democratic Congress (NDC) returned to power.
Speaking on Ekosiisen on Asempa FM on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, hosted by Osei Bonsu Phillip, Mr Anaba said the current challenges surrounding teachers’ promotions and salary placement were not characteristic of the process in previous years.
“Our promotions have been smooth until the NDC government returned to power,” Jacob Anaba stated.
His comments come amid an ongoing dispute between the government and the country’s major pre-tertiary teacher unions over promotion-related payments, salary placement and other conditions of service.
The unions — NAGRAT, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) — have been demanding the resolution of outstanding promotion issues affecting thousands of teachers.
Recent reports indicate that government has processed more than 51,000 teachers from an outstanding promotion backlog of over 80,000, but NAGRAT says about 29,000 teachers still require clarity on when their promotions will be processed.
The promotion dispute has also formed part of the broader disagreements between the teacher unions and government, contributing to the nationwide strike by the unions.
Mr Anaba’s latest remarks therefore add a political dimension to the unions’ concerns over the handling of teacher promotions under the current administration.
