Former Health Minister Dr Bernard Okoe Boye has disputed claims by the current Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, that no ambulances were insured under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
The Health Minister said the NPP left several ambulances grounded when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took office. He said the current administration has since worked to maintain the fleet, with 220 ambulances now active and plans to add another 100 in 2027.
Responding on X, Dr Okoe Boye said the claim about insurance was inaccurate, arguing that ambulances procured under the Akufo-Addo administration had insurance cover.
According to him, all 307 ambulances procured by the NPP administration were insured by Enterprise Insurance, while an additional 24 ambulances were insured by SIC Insurance.
“The statement made by the Minister for Health under the current administration is, therefore, misleading and grossly inaccurate,” he said.
Dr Okoe Boye also argued that successive governments should build on existing public assets and programmes rather than focus on discrediting previous administrations.
“I am of the firm view that governance is a continuum and that those who succeed their predecessors should devote their energies to advancing the interests and well-being of the citizenry, particularly in healthcare delivery, rather than seeking to undermine or discredit the gains of previous administrations,” he said.
The comments have brought renewed attention to the condition, insurance, and availability of Ghana’s ambulance fleet under successive administrations.
