Teacher unions have declared an immediate strike following the government’s failure to meet a deadline to resolve outstanding promotion placements and salary arrears.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) had given government until midday on Thursday, September 24, to address the concerns.
The deadline passed without the unions receiving confirmation that the outstanding payments had been made. The unions had previously raised concerns over the promotion of teachers who completed the 2025 promotion exercise, as well as other conditions of service.
According to the unions, the government had committed to automatically placing affected teachers and paying their outstanding arrears by the end of September.
The Education Minister had also pledged that salary upgrades and promotion placements for nearly 80,000 teachers would be completed this month. However, the unions said the September 24 deadline passed without the expected payments being made.
The unions have also cited the renewal of the Collective Agreement and payment of the Deprived Area Allowance among unresolved issues affecting teachers.
The leadership is expected to communicate further details to members regarding the strike and its implementation.
The latest development follows earlier assurances from the Education Ministry that promotion placements and related arrears would be addressed by the end of September.
