A group of women has marched to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, demanding the release of Senior Nursing Officer Salomey Awiti Baffoe, who remains in custody over the “Ghana Jollof” case.
The demonstration, held on Tuesday, September 29, saw participants gather at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Park before proceeding to EOCO. They chanted “Free Salomey now!” and called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene.
Some protesters gave the President a 24-hour ultimatum to act, while others expressed frustration and became emotional during the demonstration.
Salomey Baffoe, 40, is facing a charge of allegedly abetting the publication of false news linked to TikTok personality Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as “Ghana Jollof.”
The High Court on September 24 refused her bail application after prosecutors argued that she was still needed to assist with ongoing investigations. The court said the investigation was cyber-related and found that her release could create a risk of interference with witnesses. It subsequently directed the Republic to expedite the investigations.
The protesters questioned why Baffoe should remain in custody while investigations continue, particularly regarding information contained on her seized mobile phones.
Media personality KOKA, who joined the demonstration, argued that investigators should be able to examine the devices without keeping Baffoe in custody.
“If you are telling me that you need to keep her to be able to get access to cyber information on her phone, the phone you have already taken, you don't need her presence,” he said.
Baffoe is expected back in court on September 30.
