Social media activist Bongo Ideas has questioned the disparity between prison sentences imposed for robbery and illegal mining in Ghana, drawing attention to the broader issue of sentencing and environmental damage.
In a Facebook post dated September 27, 2026, Bongo Ideas compared the 4½-year prison sentence handed to Chinese national Aisha Huang for illegal mining with the combined 25-year sentence imposed on two young Ghanaian men in 2018 for robbery.
Huang was sentenced to 4½ years in prison after being convicted of operating an illegal mining enterprise and was also fined US$4,000.
Meanwhile, Patrick Frimpong and Charles Miraku, both aged 20, were sentenced to 15 and 10 years respectively after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery. The court heard that the pair attacked victims and took an Itel mobile phone valued at GH¢300; a pistol was also found on Miraku.
Bongo Ideas questioned the contrast, writing: “But for someone convicted of illegal mining, an activity that damages the state’s lands and water resources, 4½ years.”
His comments have reignited debate about proportionality in Ghana’s criminal justice system.
