The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has praised Ghana’s economic progress under its support programme, with the Fund’s African Department Director, Zeine Zeidane, describing the country’s current position as very strong.
Mr Zeidane made the remarks during a meeting with Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson on the sidelines of the ongoing IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.
He congratulated Ghana on its performance under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme and commended reforms aimed at improving economic management.
“I want to first commend you on how you are performing. The ECF was a great success,” he said.
Mr Zeidane also pointed to Ghana’s progress as an example for other countries, saying, “We tell others to follow your steps.”
He further praised the use of artificial intelligence in customs administration and acknowledged the work undertaken on state-owned enterprises and stock-flow adjustments.
The IMF’s assessment comes after it raised its forecast for Ghana’s economic growth in 2026 to 5.7%, from the 4.6% projected in April.
Responding to the revised forecast, Dr Forson said the government expected the economy to grow significantly faster than the Fund’s latest projection.
He said the government remained committed to maintaining discipline and credibility in economic management to sustain the recovery and achieve stronger growth.
Mr Zeidane ended his assessment on an optimistic note, declaring that “Ghana is in a very good place.”
