President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to invest $2 billion annually over four years under the proposed $10 billion New Economy Programme to drive industrialisation, increase production and create jobs.

The programme is expected to focus heavily on agriculture and agro-processing, which will receive 50% of the planned investment. The remaining funds will go towards industry and infrastructure to connect producers to markets.

President Mahama announced the plan on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Afienya Industrial Park, a project expected to expand Ghana’s manufacturing capacity and attract new investment.

He said the industrial park responded to growing investor interest in Ghana and the lack of available space at the Tema Export Processing Zone for businesses seeking to establish operations.

The government expects the New Economy Programme to strengthen local production and help position Ghana as a manufacturing and logistics hub for West Africa.

Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, who chairs the Board of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, also highlighted the importance of securing land without ownership disputes to support industrial growth.

She commended traditional authorities and local communities for their cooperation, noting that access to undisputed land was essential for businesses to establish factories and expand operations without costly delays.
