National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has alleged that drug trafficking networks have established clandestine laboratories in Ghana to process narcotics for export.
Nana Boakye made the allegation on during a press conference on recent drug trafficking cases involving Ghana and Ghana-linked consignments.
According to him, the alleged facilities are being used to process illicit drugs before they are transported out of the country. He also accused some government officials of facilitating the movement of narcotics.
Nana Boakye linked his claims to recent seizures of drugs in foreign jurisdictions, citing interceptions in countries including Australia, France and South Africa.
His comments come amid increased scrutiny of Ghana’s role in recent international drug trafficking investigations.
French customs authorities recently seized nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine concealed in a container carrying plastic waste from Ghana. Four Ghanaian nationals have reportedly been charged and remanded in connection with that shipment, while another suspect, Dutch national Jos Leijdekkers, remains at large, according to the report.
Nana Boakye also referenced the 2014 arrest of Nayele Ametefe at London’s Heathrow Airport after she was found with cocaine, drawing a comparison between that incident and recent developments.
He argued that the repeated interceptions point to a broader pattern requiring stronger action from authorities. His claims come as government agencies investigate recent narcotics cases and review measures to strengthen controls against drug trafficking.
