The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has assured the public that it will not shield the interdicted headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, if investigations establish that he is culpable of alleged sexual abuse involving female students.

The party’s assurance comes amid public concern over allegations against the headmaster, which have triggered police investigations and administrative action by education authorities.

According to Citi Newsroom, the NDC says it will allow the relevant investigative processes to establish the facts and will not protect any member found to have engaged in wrongdoing.

Abdulai was interdicted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) following allegations of sexual misconduct involving students at the school. The Ministry of Education has referred the matter to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for investigation.

The case has also prompted scrutiny of how complaints were handled by school and education officials. The GES has directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education and the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education to step aside while investigations continue, citing the need to prevent interference or the perception of interference.

The NDC’s position follows changes in its handling of Abdulai’s bid to contest the party’s Juaben Constituency chairmanship. After initially directing him to withdraw, the party briefly cleared him to contest before subsequently instructing him to step aside pending the police probe.

The party has stressed that its actions should not be interpreted as a determination of the allegations. Abdulai remains entitled to the presumption of innocence while the investigation proceeds.
