Chad Gilbert, founding guitarist and backing vocalist of the American pop-punk band New Found Glory, has died at the age of 45.
Gilbert died on September 20, 2026, with his family and band confirming that he passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by loved ones. His wife, Lisa Cimorelli, and his mother were by his side, according to the statement announcing his death.
A cause of death was not disclosed. Gilbert had, however, been undergoing treatment for cancer for several years. He was diagnosed with metastatic pheochromocytoma in 2021 and later revealed that doctors had discovered three tumours in his brain. He underwent brain surgery in February 2026.
Gilbert co-founded New Found Glory in Coral Springs, Florida, in 1997. The band became a prominent name in the pop-punk scene, particularly during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
He played guitar, contributed backing vocals and songwriting, and remained involved with the band across more than a dozen albums. New Found Glory's breakthrough came with albums including Sticks and Stones, which featured the popular track “My Friends Over You.”
Following his death, members of the band paid tribute to Gilbert, describing his guitar playing, songwriting and drive as central to the group's development over nearly three decades.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, daughter Lily, mother Jackie and brother Brian.
