Nine dead after shooting at Pennsylvania home as police investigate
Nine people have been confirmed dead following a shooting at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The shooting occurred on Friday evening, October 9, near East Seventh and Perry streets, prompting a police response after reports of gunfire in the area.
According to local authorities, officers responded after receiving a ShotSpotter alert and subsequently entered the residence under a search warrant. They discovered multiple people dead at the scene.
The suspect was also found dead from what police described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators have not publicly established a motive for the shooting.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the incident as one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes he had encountered during his nearly three decades in law enforcement.
Authorities have also sought to clarify the timeline of events, stating that all the deaths occurred before officers arrived. They said no additional gunshots were fired after police reached the scene, although sounds heard during the operation were reportedly associated with flash-bang devices used by tactical officers.
The City of Erie said the situation had been contained and there was no continuing threat to the public.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences to the victims’ loved ones and said his administration had offered support to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and local authorities.
Officials have not released all details concerning the victims or the events that preceded the killings.
