Former Agona West MP Cynthia Morrison says alleged attacks on her reputation by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prompted her decision to contest the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate, not her loss at the primaries.

Speaking in an interview on Starr FM on October 16, 2026, she said she had initially accepted the outcome of the primaries and had no plans to challenge the party’s candidate.

“I have no regrets because, one, I did not contest as an independent candidate because I lost the primaries. No, that is not why I contested,” she stated.

Ms Morrison explained that after losing the primaries, she had planned to travel abroad to assist her daughter, who was expecting a baby.

She said she returned home peacefully before videos emerged showing some people allegedly celebrating her defeat by hooting at her and using brooms to sweep her out of the constituency.

She said the incident became more troubling when some of the women involved allegedly approached her to apologise, claiming they had been paid by the person who won the primaries.

“Then I saw women with brooms sweeping Cynthia Morrison out of the constituency. And some of them came to apologise to me that it was the guy who won who paid them to do that,” she alleged.

The former legislator further claimed that some individuals later spread damaging allegations about her in markets and communities, with the attacks reportedly extending to her husband and personal life.

Ms Morrison said she was particularly concerned about the impact on her reputation, insisting that losing an election was not, in itself, a reason to contest independently.

“My reputation is very important. Politics, Nana Addo lost how many times before he became president? So as for the loss, it has nothing to do with it at all,” she said.

She also accused the NPP leadership of failing to address her complaints despite repeatedly raising concerns about the alleged attacks.

“Over and over again, I talked about it. Nobody called us. Nobody did anything,” she lamented.

Ms Morrison said the alleged attacks and the party leadership’s failure to intervene eventually pushed her to run as an independent candidate.

“They provoked me. Seriously. They dented my image. And anybody who is listening in Agona West knows what I'm talking about,” she added.
