The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is staging a demonstration in Accra on Tuesday, November 3, to demand greater accountability from the government over public expenditure, particularly the reported GH¢49.7 million spent on Ghana’s evacuation exercise in South Africa.
The protest, organised by the party’s National Youth Wing, is being held under the slogan “Yɛgye yɛ Sika”, which translates to “We want our money”.
Organisers say the demonstration is intended to draw attention to concerns about transparency in the management of public funds and the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.
The NPP is demanding that Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa account for the expenditure associated with the evacuation exercise. The party wants the government to publish invoices, contracts and proof of payment for chartered flights, alongside the passenger list and beneficiary details.
It is also calling for an independent audit of the exercise, which reportedly involved the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa.
On the passport controversy, the opposition party wants details of diplomatic and service passports issued since January 2025, including the eligibility status of recipients and the officials who approved them.
The protest is expected to begin at Villaggio near the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, proceed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and end at Jubilee House, where the organisers intend to present a petition to the President.
NPP Volta Regional Youth Organiser Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu has also said residents of North Tongu and people displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage are expected to participate, using the demonstration to demand support for rebuilding their homes.
The party has urged participants to remain peaceful and disciplined throughout the exercise.
