More than 3,000 residents have been displaced by flooding in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region, prompting Member of Parliament Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo to appeal for urgent assistance for affected communities.
The flooding has reportedly disrupted homes and livelihoods, leaving several residents in need of temporary shelter, food and other essential relief supplies.
Mr Tsekpo is calling on government agencies, organisations, businesses and individuals to support ongoing efforts to assist residents who have been affected by the disaster.
The appeal comes as communities in parts of Ghana continue to deal with the effects of heavy rainfall and flooding. Earlier in the year, flooding across the country resulted in significant displacement and disruption to essential services, with authorities and humanitarian organisations providing relief to affected populations.
The World Health Organisation said floods recorded in Ghana in June affected tens of thousands of people, including 38,802 people in the Greater Accra Region, where 7,761 households were displaced.
In Hohoe, the latest situation has renewed calls for immediate support for residents whose homes and livelihoods have been affected.
The Hohoe Municipal Assembly has previously undertaken community sanitation activities, including exercises in flood-prone communities such as Alavanyo Wudidi, as part of efforts to improve environmental conditions across the municipality.
Mr Tsekpo's appeal is expected to increase attention on the immediate needs of the displaced residents, while authorities assess the extent of damage and coordinate relief efforts.
The MP has urged stakeholders to respond quickly to help affected families recover from the impact of the flooding.
