President John Dramani Mahama says financing has been secured for water supply projects in Tamale, Damongo and Yendi, with construction expected to begin soon.
He made the announcement on Monday, October 19, during a courtesy call by the Regent of the Dagbon Kingdom.
According to the President, the Minister of Finance secured approval for the funding following engagements with the European Union.
“We have secured the funding for the Tamale, Damongo and also the Yendi water systems. Indeed, the Minister of Finance was in the European Union, and it has been approved, and so very soon work will commence on this water system,” he said.
Mahama also outlined plans to boost water supply in Tamale while residents await the larger project. He said the government had financed the replacement of old pumps at the existing water works, with the new equipment expected to start operating in November.
“In the meantime, we have financed the change of the old pumps at the old water works, and so by next month, in November, when the new pumps start working, Tamale will see an increase in water supply even before the EU project,” he added.
The projects fall under the Northern Ghana Water and Sanitation Project, which seeks to improve water supply and sanitation services in Tamale and Yendi in the Northern Region and Damongo in the Savannah Region.
The financing package includes €98 million in grants and a €225 million highly concessional financing facility from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The projects are expected to expand access to reliable potable water in the three communities.
