Lawyers for Salomey Awiti Baffoe, the senior nursing officer facing charges in the “Ghana Jollof” case, are preparing to appeal the High Court’s decision to deny her bail.
The Accra High Court on Thursday, September 24, refused Baffoe’s bail application, citing concerns that her release could interfere with witnesses while investigations into the cyber-related case continue. The court, however, directed the prosecution to expedite its investigations.
Speaking after the ruling, Baffoe’s lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, said the defence had received instructions from her family to pursue every lawful avenue to secure her release.
“We are proceeding by filing an appeal against the decision of the High Court,” he said.
The lawyer also disclosed plans to petition the Chief Justice to consider allowing the Court of Appeal to sit during the legal vacation to hear the matter.
According to Mr Awuah, the defence believes the continued detention is unnecessary because the police have already seized Baffoe’s phones and conducted investigations into them.
He also questioned the prosecution’s argument that releasing his client could lead to the deletion of evidence.
“In terms of deletion, how is Madam Salomey Awiti Baffoe in a position to delete information?” he asked.
Baffoe, a 40-year-old senior nursing officer from Techiman, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of abetment of crime relating to the alleged publication of false news.
Her lawyers say they intend to seek an expedited hearing at the Court of Appeal once the relevant court records are transmitted.
