The High Court in Accra has denied a bail application filed on behalf of Salomey Awiti Baffoe, the 40-year-old senior nursing officer at the centre of the ongoing “Ghana Jollof” TikTok case.
The court’s decision on Thursday, September 24, followed opposition from the prosecution, which argued that Salomey remains relevant to ongoing investigations.
She is facing a charge of abetment of the publication of false news in connection with content allegedly circulated through the “Ghana Jollof” social media account. She has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody.
In its ruling, the High Court said the investigation involved cyber-related issues and expressed concern that releasing Baffoe could create a risk of interference with witnesses.
The court subsequently directed the Republic to expedite its investigations.
Salomey Baffoe’s lawyer, Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, had urged the court to grant bail, arguing that his client was presumed innocent and was entitled to her liberty while the case was being investigated.
He also challenged the prosecution’s concerns about possible interference with witnesses, arguing that the State had not provided sufficient evidence to establish such a risk.
The defence further pointed to Salomey Baffoe’s personal circumstances, including her responsibility for minor children.
The case has attracted significant attention following the arrest and remand of Salomey Baffoe, who is alleged to have acted as a liaison for Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known online as “Ghana Jollof”. Kodua is currently outside Ghana and has been declared wanted by the police.
