US President Donald Trump has welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House as the two leaders hold high-level discussions on trade, technology and other issues shaping relations between the world’s two largest economies.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were received by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump during a formal ceremony at the White House on Thursday, September 24.
The meeting forms part of Xi’s state visit to the United States, with trade expected to feature prominently in discussions between the two presidents.
Trump said the two countries had already made what he described as “tremendous strides” on issues affecting their relationship.
“We’re working on a more balanced trading relationship, including new market access for American farmers and ranches,” Trump said.
Beyond trade, the US president said the discussions would cover security and technological developments, including artificial intelligence and what he called “super intelligence”.
He said decisions taken by the two countries in these areas could have long-term consequences.
“Decisions made in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come,” Trump said.
The White House meeting comes amid efforts by Washington and Beijing to manage disagreements over trade and technology while maintaining dialogue on broader strategic issues.
Trump also emphasised the importance of the relationship between the two countries, saying both sides could benefit from greater cooperation.
The talks are expected to provide an opportunity for the leaders to discuss areas of mutual interest while addressing outstanding differences between Washington and Beijing.
