Lawyer Martin Kpebu has criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over its handling of the Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, saying the agency “goofed” by keeping him in custody.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, October 3, Kpebu questioned why Baffour Awuah was detained when he had been aware of the investigation since February and had not attempted to abscond.

“Since Baffour Awuah became aware of this in February and didn’t abscond, I will never understand the detention. There is no way EOCO can convince me that keeping Baffour Awuah in custody helps their case,” he said.

He also questioned the decision to keep the MP in custody for several hours without questioning him.

“I am still wondering why EOCO had to keep Baffour Awuah for four hours without questioning him. EOCO goofed,” Kpebu added.

Kpebu argued that continued detention was unnecessary, particularly given the circumstances surrounding the MP’s appearance before EOCO.

“The Supreme Court has ruled that every offence is bailable,” he said.

His comments follow an EOCO statement confirming that Baffour Awuah remained in the agency’s custody after voluntarily surrendering on October 1.

EOCO said it was working with the Office of the Attorney-General to meet the constitutional timelines and bring the MP before a weekend court.

“Suspect Nana Baffour Agyei Awuah is cooperating with the Office to continue with the necessary investigative processes and procedures,” EOCO stated.

The agency also denied reports that Baffour Awuah had been granted GH¢50 million bail, urging the public to disregard such reports.
