The Accra High Court will rule on November 4, 2026, on a bail application by former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

His lawyers are seeking his release from custody while he appeals his conviction and 20-year prison sentence for illegal mining-related offences involving a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The application was initially scheduled for hearing on August 19 but was adjourned after Boasiako and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, failed to appear in court. The matter was subsequently rescheduled for Thursday, October 15.

The Attorney-General has opposed the application, arguing that Boasiako poses a flight risk if granted bail.

Speaking to the media, Atta Akyea expressed disappointment with the Attorney-General’s position, questioning the basis for describing his client as a flight risk. However, he said he remained hopeful that the court would grant the application on November 4.

“I found it unfortunate that the Attorney General argued that Chairman Wontumi was a flight risk without any basis. I remain hopeful that the court will grant the bail application on November 4,” he said.

The court’s ruling will determine whether Boasiako can be released from custody while his appeal against the conviction and sentence is pending.
