Four suspects have been arrested in Tamale after police seized 142 compressed parcels of suspected Indian hemp during an intelligence-led operation.
The operation was carried out on Thursday, October 15, 2026, by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team, known as Red Maria.
According to a police situational report dated October 16, the 13-member team, led by Chief Inspector Abu Isahaku, intercepted a mini commercial bus travelling from Bimbilla towards Tamale at about 6:30 p.m.
The bus, with registration number GW 7800-14, was driven by 46-year-old Alhassan Zeblim. A search revealed 142 compressed parcels of suspected Indian hemp concealed in four jute sacks, commonly known as Ghana Must Go bags.
Zeblim reportedly told officers he was transporting the consignment to a tricycle rider in Tamale and contacted the intended recipient.
Police arrested the rider, identified as 34-year-old Ibrahim Yussif, when he arrived at the agreed location.
His 56-year-old brother, Bawa Yussif, who had accompanied him to receive the consignment, was also arrested.
During interrogation, Ibrahim Yussif reportedly identified Mohammed Haruna as the owner of the suspected narcotics and led officers to a drinking spot called Sarafina in Tamale, where Haruna was arrested.
Police said the four suspects offered the officers GH¢50,000 in an attempt to influence them, but the team refused the alleged bribe.
The suspected narcotics and one tricycle were seized as exhibits. The four suspects and the exhibits have been handed over to the Regional Drugs Law Enforcement Unit for further investigations.
Police said investigations are ongoing and the suspects are expected to be brought before a court once the process is completed.
