Four Killed in Oregon Elementary School Shooting as Community Member Stops Teen Gunman
A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left three children and a teacher dead, with two other victims hospitalised, as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, when a 16-year-old boy allegedly opened fire at the school, according to police and media reports. The children who died were aged five, eight and 11.
Police said emergency calls initially reported gunfire directed at a vehicle near the school before further callers alerted authorities that a gunman had entered the building.
The suspected shooter was found dead after a community member reportedly followed and confronted him inside the school. Authorities said the individual intervened as officers were arriving, although the bystander’s identity has not been publicly confirmed.
A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were also injured and taken to hospital. Their conditions were reported as critical in subsequent updates.
The motive for the attack and whether the teenager had any connection to the school remain unclear. Investigators are working to establish the events leading up to the shooting.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed sympathy for the victims and praised the community member who intervened, saying the person’s actions likely helped prevent further loss of life.
The shooting has shaken the local community, with residents gathering for a vigil to mourn the victims and support affected families.
The Bend-La Pine School District cancelled classes and school activities on Friday as authorities continued their investigation and arrangements were made to support students, staff and families.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about school safety and gun violence in the United States.
