Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Youth Authority, Akosua Asaa Manu, has questioned the response of the Gender Minister to allegations involving women and children, calling for equal concern and accountability in such cases.

In a Facebook post on Friday, October 16, the social marketer and political activist criticised what she described as differences in the attention given to high-profile cases and other allegations involving women and children.

She said the Gender Minister was quick to contact the husband of a popular influencer following allegations involving child abuse, but questioned whether similar urgency had been shown in other cases.

Manu cited the case of Salomey Awiti Baffoe, whose children, she said, were left to cope while their mother was taken from her home and detained in Accra for nearly three weeks.

She also questioned what steps the Gender Minister had taken regarding allegations of rape involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, who is reportedly a constituency secretary aspiring to become chairman.

Manu further asked what action the Education Minister had taken over the matter.

She argued that the protection of women and children should not depend on their social standing, political connections or the level of public attention surrounding their cases.

“The protection of women and children cannot depend on their social standing, political connections or the publicity surrounding their circumstances,” she wrote.

Manu said the handling of such cases should reflect consistent empathy and accountability, regardless of who is involved.

“The true test of leadership is not how quickly we respond to high-profile cases, but how firmly we stand up for those who may have neither influence nor a powerful voice to speak for them,” she added.
