The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced disciplinary measures against two teachers of Twene Amanfo Senior High Technical School in Techiman following an incident in which they allegedly assaulted a student.

The proposed sanctions include formal reprimands and their removal from their roles as Masters on Duty, according to Dr Issahaque Munwaru, Deputy Director-General of GES in charge of Quality and Access.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, November 2, Dr Munwaru said the measures were recommended by a committee established by the school’s management to investigate the incident.

The teachers will also be referred for guidance and counselling, alongside the affected students. The school is expected to surcharge the teachers for medical expenses incurred in treating the children.

Dr Munwaru explained that preliminary findings suggested the teachers had intervened after discovering that some students were bullying their colleagues and demanding money from them. Some students allegedly used the metal parts of their belts to whip those who refused to pay.

He stressed, however, that the alleged misconduct by students did not justify the teachers’ use of physical force.

“The law does not permit anything that will inflict pain on the child,” he said, referring to the GES Code of Conduct, which prohibits corporal punishment and physical abuse of students.

The development follows the circulation of a video showing two teachers allegedly assaulting a final-year student. The Bono East Regional Police Command has arrested the two teachers, identified as Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe and Ameyaw Adusa, to assist with investigations.

GES says it is cooperating with the police as its internal disciplinary process continues. Dr Munwaru warned that any repeat of similar misconduct would attract more severe sanctions.
