Ghana has an estimated 3.1 million cryptocurrency users and ranks 29th globally in crypto adoption, Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation Minister Samuel Nartey George has disclosed.
The minister highlighted the figures while discussing the country's expanding virtual asset market and the need to establish stronger regulatory safeguards around digital financial activities.
The growing number of users reflects the increasing interest in cryptocurrencies among Ghanaians, particularly young people seeking alternative investment opportunities and digital payment options.
The development also presents opportunities for innovation within the country's financial technology sector, while raising concerns about consumer protection, financial crime and the security of digital transactions.
Ghana has taken steps to address these concerns through the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025, which provides a legal framework for regulating businesses operating within the virtual asset ecosystem.
The legislation is expected to strengthen oversight of cryptocurrency service providers, improve transparency and establish clearer requirements for companies offering digital asset-related services.
The Bank of Ghana has also been working towards implementing regulatory measures to ensure that the growing use of virtual assets does not undermine financial stability.
The International Monetary Fund has identified Ghana as one of the largest cryptocurrency markets in sub-Saharan Africa, estimating that between 8 and 17 per cent of the population has bought or sold digital assets.
With millions of people already participating in the market, the challenge for regulators will be to encourage innovation while ensuring that users and businesses operate within a secure and accountable environment.
The latest figures underscore the importance of building public awareness and strengthening regulation as cryptocurrency adoption continues to expand in Ghana.
