The National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mavis Hawa Koomson, has called on Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to speak publicly on issues affecting women and girls, particularly the alleged sexual abuse of female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

Speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the former Awutu Senya East MP expressed disappointment with what she described as the Vice President’s silence on women’s welfare and protection.

Hawa Koomson argued that Professor Opoku-Agyemang, as Ghana’s first female Vice President, should use her position to address concerns affecting women, especially the allegations involving at least 19 female students at the school.

She questioned how the Vice President and President John Dramani Mahama would feel if similar allegations involved members of their own families.

“I am calling on the Vice President, who is also a female and a woman and a grandmother, to ask herself whether she would be happy if someone did this to her granddaughter. His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama should also ask himself whether he would be happy if someone did this to his daughter,” she said.

She further urged the Vice President to publicly condemn sexual abuse and demonstrate a stronger commitment to protecting women and girls.

“So, I am begging Her Excellency the Vice President to speak about these issues. Whenever issues concerning women arise in this country, she remains silent. For once, she should speak up,” she added.

The comments come amid public concern over allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students at Obuasi SHTS, which have prompted calls for investigations and accountability within the education sector.
