Minister of State for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu says President John Dramani Mahama has directed officials to take all necessary steps to end the ongoing teachers’ strike and return pre-tertiary teachers to the classroom.

Speaking on JoyNews PM Express on September 30, 2026, Kwakye Ofosu said the President had been briefed on the impact of the strike and wanted the matter resolved within days.

“Oh, of course, he has been briefed. So, he has instructed that every necessary action be taken to ensure that teachers go back to the classroom,” he said.

Kwakye Ofosu said teachers were an important part of the education system and could not remain out of the classroom for an extended period.

“Government values the contributions of teachers, and the teachers are highly valued, highly respected human resources, and because of their importance, we cannot afford for them to withdraw their services over an extended period of time,” he said.

He said a key issue is a discrepancy between figures from the Accountant-General’s Department, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) on the number of teachers affected.

“I think both the Finance Ministry and the Accountant-General have clarified that on their part they have done what has to be done,” he said.

According to him, while the Finance Ministry and Accountant-General have provided their data, differences remain between those figures and information from the GSS.

He said the relevant institutions were working to reconcile the figures and facilitate payment to the affected teachers. Presidential intervention could follow if the discussions reach a deadlock.

The strike has disrupted teaching and learning across the country, with GNAT, NAGRAT and other pre-tertiary teacher unions withdrawing their services.
