The headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, has been referred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu confirmed on Monday, October 19, that the police would investigate the criminal aspects of the case while education authorities conduct a separate administrative inquiry.
Mr Abdulai has been interdicted pending the outcome of the investigations, the Minister said.
He stressed that the government would not tolerate sexual misconduct involving teachers and students, describing such behaviour as an abuse of office.
“Any act of sexual misconduct involving a teacher and a student amounts to abuse of office, and government takes strong exception to it. We have forwarded it to the criminal investigation department to deal with the criminal aspects of it whilst I’ve asked for the suspension of the headmaster without prejudice whilst we look into the merits of the case,” he said in an interview with Citi News.
Beyond the Obuasi SHS case, the Minister said the government was considering broader measures to address indiscipline in schools.
He announced plans to establish a committee to advise on stronger regulations governing the conduct of both teachers and students.
The Minister also backed proposals to give the Ghana Education Service’s code of conduct and standards legal force under Article 11 of the 1992 Constitution.
