More than 60,000 teachers have taken part in the Ghana Education Service (GES) promotion exercise, with the Service projecting a significant increase in the number of educators who can attain higher professional ranks under its revised career progression policy.

The three-day exercise ended on Wednesday, November 5, after being held at examination centres across the country. The GES said monitoring officers reported that it was generally smooth, with no major incidents.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, the Service said this year’s exercise was significant because of a policy that separates professional ranks from administrative positions.

The change is intended to allow teachers to advance in their careers based on their professional development, experience and years of service, rather than being limited by the number of available administrative vacancies.

Under the new system, the number of teachers expected to attain the rank of Director II is projected to increase by 1,500 per cent, while those reaching Director I could rise by 340 per cent.

The GES also expects more teachers to progress to Principal Superintendent, Assistant Director II, Assistant Director I and Deputy Director.

The Service said it had put measures in place to ensure eligible teachers could attain higher ranks without being restricted by available positions, similar to arrangements made during the previous year’s exercise.

It believes the revised framework will improve teachers’ morale and motivation by creating a more inclusive system that recognises professional competence and commitment.

The GES congratulated participating teachers and thanked monitoring officers, invigilators, administrators and other stakeholders for helping to organise the exercise.
