The Rent Commission has warned the University of Ghana to suspend its proposed 26% increase in hostel fees or risk legal action.
Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku told Joy News that the Commission is seeking legal advice from the Attorney-General on possible steps to obtain an injunction against the planned adjustment.
He maintained that the university must comply with the country’s laws when setting accommodation charges, stressing that no institution is above the law.
The warning comes as opposition to the proposed increase grows, with University of Ghana students expected to stage a protest on Friday to demand that the decision be reversed.
The students have criticised the planned adjustment, describing it as the commercialisation of student accommodation on campus.
The proposed 26% increase has also raised concerns about the affordability of hostel facilities, particularly for students already facing rising living costs and other academic expenses.
The Rent Commission’s position raises the possibility of a legal dispute if the university proceeds with the increase before the concerns are resolved.
