Russian aluminium producer Rusal plans to establish a joint venture in Ghana to mine and process bauxite, targeting production of five million metric tonnes annually.
The company’s Chief Executive, Evgeny Nikitin, told Russia’s RIA state news agency after signing a memorandum of understanding on Thursday.
Under the proposed arrangement, the joint venture is expected to have an annual bauxite production target of five million metric tonnes and processing capacity of 1.2 million tonnes.
The agreement was signed with Ghana’s state agency responsible for developing the country’s aluminium industry on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum in Moscow.
Bauxite is the primary raw material used in the production of aluminium.
Rusal, regarded as the world’s largest aluminium producer outside China, already operates major bauxite assets in Guinea. These include the Compagnie des Bauxites de Kindia (CBK), the Dian-Dian deposit and the Friguia complex.
The company operates seven bauxite mines worldwide, including two in Russia. It produced 18.453 million metric tonnes of bauxite in 2025, with its own production meeting 88 per cent of the requirements of its alumina refineries.
