At least 14 people have been killed and another 14 injured after a Russian jet-powered drone struck a crowded railway platform in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, local officials say.

Dnipropetrovsk regional head Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed the casualties, adding that an 11-year-old boy was among those wounded in Thursday’s attack.

Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said a passenger train travelling towards the southern city of Zaporizhzhia was at one of the station’s platforms when the drone hit.

The strike caused significant damage, with images released by Ukrainian rescue services showing a large crater in the platform and a nearby train with shattered windows.

Railway operator chief Oleksandr Pertsovsky said authorities had announced an elevated threat level in Dnipro before the attack. However, many passengers remained on the platform when the drone struck.

“But unfortunately there were still a large number of people on the platform,” he said.

Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov described the incident as a tragedy, confirming that a drone had hit an electric civilian train.

The attack adds to concerns over the safety of Ukraine’s railway network, which remains vital for civilian transport and the movement of essential supplies during the war. Russian forces have repeatedly struck railway infrastructure, although Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians.

Russia’s military had not publicly commented on the reported Dnipro strike at the time of the announcement.

Emergency responders continued dealing with the aftermath as officials assessed the damage and casualties. The incident has renewed attention on the risks faced by passengers using Ukraine’s transport system amid continued Russian attacks.
