A two-year-old girl has died after being trapped in a domestic fire at Cantonments, near Susanna Lodge, in Accra. The incident occurred on Sunday, September 20, 2026, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Firefighters responded to the outbreak and worked to bring the blaze under control, but the young girl could not be rescued.
Her remains were subsequently handed over to the Cantonments Police for the necessary procedures.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about domestic fire safety, particularly as house fires remain the most frequently recorded category of fire outbreaks in Ghana.
Figures from the GNFS show that the country recorded 2,055 fire outbreaks during the first quarter of 2026, representing a 10.02 per cent decline from the 2,261 cases recorded during the same period in 2025.
Despite the decline in the overall number of incidents, the estimated value of property destroyed increased significantly. Damage rose from GH¢167.4 million in the first quarter of 2025 to GH¢215.5 million during the corresponding period in 2026.
Domestic fires accounted for the largest share of reported outbreaks. The number increased from 770 cases in the first quarter of 2025 to 881 cases in 2026.
The GNFS has repeatedly identified electrical faults, negligence and the improper use of electrical appliances among factors contributing to domestic and commercial fires.
