A 64-year-old man in Virginia, United States, has been arrested after allegedly restraining his wife with tape in their basement so he could watch a football game without interruptions.

Terry Ward was arrested on October 11 and charged with abduction after Richmond police responded to a domestic disturbance at the couple’s home on Maplewood Avenue near Byrd Park, according to WTVR/CBS 6 Richmond.

Police said Ward’s wife told officers she had been taped to a chair in the basement. According to documents cited by WTVR, Ward allegedly admitted to restraining her and placing her in the basement.

The woman reportedly remained tied to the chair for between 30 and 45 minutes. Officers who arrived at the scene also observed marks and tape residue on her arms, according to police reports.

Reports by WTVR and Los Angeles Magazine said the incident attracted widespread attention online following allegations that Ward wanted to watch football upstairs without being disturbed.

However, the case involves allegations of domestic violence and unlawful restraint. In addition to the abduction charge, Los Angeles Magazine reported that Ward faces a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery against a family or household member.

Court records indicate that Ward is scheduled to appear before the Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court on November 10.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and Ward is presumed innocent unless found guilty. Authorities have not publicly released further details, while local media reports indicate that the investigation is ongoing.
