The elder sister of incarcerated former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Regina Wiafe Antwi, has died.
Former NPP Ashanti Regional Communications Officer Paul Yandoh disclosed the death, claiming that Regina Wiafe Antwi collapsed after her brother was arrested and imprisoned.
Speaking on Nhyira FM, Yandoh said Wednesday, September 30, 2026, marks the one-week observance of the deceased, which is expected to be held at Kuntenase in the Ashanti Region.
“Due to the maltreatment and jailing of Wontumi, his sister collapsed and has eventually died. Tomorrow marks her one-week celebration,” he said.
Yandoh also claimed that Wontumi’s father had been deeply affected by his son’s incarceration and had struggled to eat.
Chairman Wontumi has been in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison since July. He was convicted in a case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.
An Accra High Court sentenced him to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty of offences related to mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. The sentences on the two counts are to run concurrently.
Wontumi has appealed the conviction and sentence. His lawyers filed the appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026, challenging the High Court’s decision.
