Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to learn from the outcome of the 2026 United States midterm elections, warning that political power can quickly shift when voters become dissatisfied with those in authority.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, November 4, the Effutu MP cautioned the NDC Majority against using its numerical advantage to intimidate opposition lawmakers or restrict their participation in parliamentary proceedings.

He argued that the US elections, which saw the Democratic Party take control of both chambers of Congress from President Donald Trump’s Republicans, demonstrated that commanding parliamentary numbers do not guarantee lasting political dominance.

Afenyo-Markin said the Republicans had enjoyed a strong majority just two years earlier but had now suffered an electoral setback.

“We [The Minority] may be few but democracy does not allow the Majority an unfettered platform to intimidate,” he told Parliament.

He added that the Minority was prepared to challenge the Majority despite its smaller numbers.

“Just yesterday [November 3], they have been humbled by the people. We want to signal this to the Majority, you may see our numbers to be few but we can face you any day,” he stated.

The Minority Leader's comments come amid tensions between the two sides over parliamentary procedures, the treatment of opposition MPs and the exercise of the Speaker's authority.
