The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West in the Ashanti Region, Abubakar Sedik, has died after attending a series of official engagements in Kumasi on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Mr Sedik was among DCEs who participated in a meeting between the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, and trader unions at the Kumasi Kejetia Phase II project site.
The stakeholders’ engagement, which focused on issues concerning the Kumasi Central Market, ended at about 5:00 p.m.
Following the meeting, Mr Sedik and some of the other district chief executives proceeded to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council for another engagement with the minister later in the evening.
According to accounts surrounding the incident, Mr Sedik was travelling back to his district after the meeting when he complained of severe pain around his heart.
He later died on Sunday evening.
While reports have attributed his death to a heart attack, an official medical confirmation of the cause of death was not immediately available at the time of publication.
His death has since drawn attention across the Ashanti Region, particularly within the local government administration, where he served as the DCE for Ahafo Ano South West.
The sudden nature of his death has also prompted condolences from colleagues and stakeholders who interacted with him during his official engagements in Kumasi earlier that day.
