A new monument dedicated to Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has been unveiled at Sanzule, near Eikwe in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.
The Osagyefo Roundabout was unveiled on Sunday, September 20, as part of activities commemorating the 117th anniversary of Dr Nkrumah’s birth.
The initiative was led by Ellembelle Member of Parliament and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who unveiled the monument alongside renowned Kenyan lawyer and Pan-Africanist, Professor Patrick Lumumba.
The roundabout is intended to serve as a lasting reminder of Nkrumah’s role in Ghana’s independence struggle and his advocacy for the political and economic liberation of Africa.
Speaking at the ceremony, Armah-Kofi Buah described the mounment as more than a physical monument, linking it to Nkrumah’s philosophy of self-reliance.
He said Nzemaland had produced one of the country's most influential political figures, noting Nkrumah’s central role in leading Ghana to independence in 1957.
Professor Patrick Lumumba, who joined the unveiling, described Nkrumah as a figure whose influence extended well beyond Ghana.
He said the former President’s ideas and philosophy had continued to resonate across Africa and commended the decision to create a permanent landmark in his honour.
Nkrumah was a leading advocate of Pan-African unity and was among the prominent African leaders involved in the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, the institution that later evolved into the African Union.
The ceremony also brought together political figures, traditional leaders and members of the Nkrumah family.
NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah highlighted the historical connection between Nkrumah and the Nzema area, noting that both Nkrumah and Paa Grant, a key figure in Ghana’s pre-independence political movement, hailed from Nzemaland.
Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of the late President, expressed appreciation to the organisers for the gesture.
She said the family hoped that the ideals associated with her father, including freedom, development, prosperity and self-reliance, would continue to find expression in contemporary governance.
