The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Hon. Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has launched a scathing attack on Dennis Miracles Aboagye, describing him as a thief and accusing him of stealing GH¢55 million belonging to the state.
The confrontation occurred on Saturday, October 31, 2026, during a heated discussion on JoyNews' Newsfile programme, where panellists were debating the ongoing fight against illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.
During the discussion, the Akwatia MP directly confronted Aboagye, telling him: "You are a thief. You have stolen 55 million cedis of Ghana's money."
The explosive remark brought an intense political dimension to the discussion, which centred on illegal mining, accountability and the responsibilities of political actors in addressing the galamsey menace.
The GH¢55 million figure referenced by the MP relates to allegations of financial and procurement irregularities at the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), where Aboagye previously served as Executive Secretary.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed investigations into suspected financial irregularities involving approximately GH¢55 million at the institution.
However, Aboagye has disputed the amount and maintained that the GH¢55 million figure does not reflect the matters discussed with investigators. He has also challenged aspects of the allegations against him.
The exchange on Newsfile is likely to reignite public discussion about accountability, political responsibility and the need for transparency in the management of public funds, particularly as Ghana continues to grapple with the devastating effects of illegal mining.
