Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Awentami Paul Afoko has pledged to support Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the presidency in 2028, saying he will continue working behind the scenes to help the party return to government.

In a statement issued after the party’s national executive elections, Afoko said he remained committed to supporting the NPP’s presidential candidate, despite failing to secure the national chairmanship position.

He explained that his campaign had been built around the message of the “3Rs” – Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power – but acknowledged that delegates had chosen a different direction.

Afoko said the outcome was not due to a lack of effort and expressed hope that the vision of the newly elected executives would help the party achieve its objective in the 2028 general elections.

He urged party members to put internal differences aside and rally behind the new leadership and Bawumia.

The former chairman also thanked his campaign team and supporters for their commitment throughout the contest, promising to meet them for a review of the campaign and personally appreciate their support.

He further congratulated the successful candidates and commended the Electoral Commission and the NPP’s National Election Committee for what he described as a smooth and uneventful election.

Afoko’s pledge comes as the NPP begins reorganising its structures following the election of new national executives, with the party seeking to strengthen its internal unity ahead of the next general election.
