A 15-year-old Ghanaian boy has been fatally shot while walking near a school in the Bronx, New York, prompting police to launch a search for three teenage suspects.
The victim, identified as Javits Frimpong, was shot once in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont neighbourhood.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), officers rushed him to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators are searching for three teenage boys, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, who were reportedly wearing black clothing and blue surgical masks. Police have not established what led to the shooting, and no arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
Javits had moved from Ghana to the United States about a year ago to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong.
The grieving father told CBS News that his son had previously complained about being bullied at school. He said the school principal had informed him that two students involved in an earlier altercation with Javits had been suspended.
Thomas also recalled that his son had told him one of the students repeatedly harassed him during lunch breaks, despite his complaints to school authorities.
However, police have not confirmed any connection between the reported bullying and the fatal shooting. The circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
The teenager's death has left his family and neighbours devastated. His father has appealed to those responsible to surrender to the police and face justice.
The NYPD is continuing its investigation and seeking information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
