Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu says Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson’s record in managing Ghana’s economy could strengthen his position in a potential contest for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer slot ahead of the 2028 elections.

However, he noted that the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, also has considerable support among grassroots members, making a potential contest difficult to predict.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Point, Kpebu said Asiedu Nketia remained popular among ordinary party members.

“We all recognise that Asiedu Nketia is very popular in terms of the grassroots. He has a lot of grassroots support,” he stated.

Kpebu credited Ato Forson with helping to stabilise the economy, particularly through efforts to strengthen the cedi and improve Ghana’s foreign exchange position.

He also commended GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi and his team for their contribution to the gold trade and foreign exchange earnings, describing their work as part of the government’s broader economic management efforts.

Despite the progress, Kpebu raised concerns about rising transport fares, saying some commercial operators had increased charges beyond the reported 8 per cent adjustment. He urged the Ministry of Transport to investigate and ensure commuters were not overcharged.

He further pointed to the government’s efforts to reduce wasteful spending and its planned New Economy Policy, expected to feature in the November 2026 Budget, as part of its economic programme.

“Based on the economy and his youthful nature, you would ordinarily say Ato Forson should be in a good stead to clinch the flagbearer race,” he said.

Kpebu nevertheless maintained that Asiedu Nketia’s grassroots support was a significant factor in any potential contest for the party’s leadership ahead of the 2028 elections.
