Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe, has been remanded in custody after appearing in court over an alleged assault on an anti-corruption officer.
The 29-year-old appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, November 5, alongside four other men following their arrest earlier in the week.
The suspects are accused of assaulting an official of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) during an operation involving the seizure of two luxury vehicles at a lodge in Harare.
Police identified the other suspects as Munashe Mubawu, Terrence Johannes Chinyemba, Fredson Peter and Solomon Pamire.
ZACC spokesperson Simiso Mlevu said the commission had seized a Lamborghini Urus and a Mercedes-Benz over suspicions that the vehicles were in Zimbabwe illegally.
According to the commission, import records indicated that the Lamborghini entered the country in June and was recorded as having left on July 12. The Mercedes-Benz was also reportedly recorded as having departed for South Africa on October 10.
However, investigators later found both vehicles at the lodge, prompting the seizure and subsequent police investigation.
Reports indicate that the five suspects were remanded in custody, with a bail hearing scheduled for Friday.
Neither vehicle has been directly linked to Mugabe, and the allegations against him and the other suspects have not been proven in court.
The arrest adds to Mugabe’s previous encounters with law enforcement in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
