Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to a close a remarkable 23-year career with Portugal that established him as the leading goalscorer in men's international football.
The 41-year-old confirmed on Thursday, November 5, 2026, that he would step away from the national team after the November international break, passing on the iconic number seven shirt he has worn since the early years of his career.
In an emotional announcement, Ronaldo reflected on the significance of representing his country and the people who supported him throughout his journey.
He said the shirt had never belonged to him alone, describing his 23 years wearing it as a privilege and responsibility. He added that the time had come for the next generation to take it forward.
Ronaldo made his Portugal debut in 2003 and leaves the national team with 234 appearances and 146 goals, both records in men's international football.
His international career included three major trophies. He captained Portugal to its first major international title at Euro 2016 and later helped the country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
He also made history by appearing at six FIFA World Cups, becoming the first male footballer to achieve the feat, and scoring at five different editions.
His decision follows earlier indications that the 2026 World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament. Although he had remained uncertain about his international future, Thursday's announcement confirms the end of his Portugal journey.
